Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

What is Freerice?

Freerice is an educational trivia game that helps you get smarter while making a difference for people around the world. Every question you answer correctly raises 10 grains of rice for the World Food Programme (WFP) to support its work saving and changing lives around the world.

How does Freerice raise money?

Private sponsors match the rice grain donations generated within Freerice, triggering a financial payment to WFP. This money goes into the pot of "greatest needs" to support the organization's ongoing emergencies. 100% of all funds generated via Freerice go to the World Food Programme. Freerice does not earn or keep any money it raises.

Can I play Freerice for community service hours?

Thousands of students use Freerice every day for virtual volunteering and community service hours. We are a very small team, so we are not able to individually verify players, but you can download the volunteer certificate under our "Resources" and fill it out yourself to acknowledge your rice grains.

Are you really donating rice?

Rice is a metaphor used to make the game tangible for players. Although some rice is indeed purchased as part of WFP’s food assistance programs, the funds generated through the game support WFP’s programs overall, where needs are greatest, not specifically the purchasing of rice. Every right answer on the game generates the equivalent of ten grains of rice as payment towards the United Nations World Food Programme’s operations in over 80 countries around the world.

Where are the donations going to?

All funds generated via Freerice go to support the UN World Food Programme's lifesaving work around the world. The donations are used as flexible funding to respond to urgent emergencies in countries like Afghanistan, Ethiopia and Ukraine, but we cannot track exactly where they go on a daily basis.

Am I still making a difference if I'm not logged in?

Yes, you can play Freerice with or without an account. If you answer questions and are not logged in, your rice grains are still being counted through our website — you just won't be able to keep track of them over time. The best way to use Freerice is to create an account so you can track your rice grains.

There's a misspelling / wrong answer / problem with one of your questions.

Please send us an email and let us know what the problem is so we can fix it in the game.

Do you still have a Freerice app?

We previously offered the Freerice app on the App Store and Google Play Store. However, due to resource constraints, we made the decision to remove the app to focus on enhancing our responsive web platform. You can continue to play Freerice on both desktop and mobile devices by visiting www.freerice.com in your browser. We appreciate your understanding and hope to reintroduce the app in the future.

When was Freerice created?

Freerice was created in October 2007 by John Breen, an American computer programmer, as a way to help people improve their vocabulary while supporting the fight against hunger. In 2009, Breen donated the platform to the UN World Food Programme (WFP), ensuring its continued growth as a tool for education and global impact. Today, Freerice remains a key initiative of WFP, combining learning with a powerful mission to combat hunger worldwide.

I'm not seeing any ads.

We have removed all commercial ads in Freerice and have a new funding mechanism in the platform. Private sponsors now match the rice grains earned in the game. Every question you answer correctly earns 10 grains of rice, triggering a financial payment to WFP. The donations generated through Freerice help support WFP's work in emergencies around the world.

Can I contribute a category or more questions to Freerice?

We're always looking for volunteers to share their knowledge and help us add more questions to Freerice. Please send an email to wfp.freerice@wfp.org and let us know a little bit about you, your area of expertise and what questions you would like to contribute to the game.

Freerice at School

How can schools ensure Freerice works smoothly on their network?

To ensure Freerice functions without interruptions, schools should configure their network software to "trust" or "allow" all requests to the following domains:

  • freerice.com
  • *.freerice.com (all subdomains of freerice.com)

This setup ensures that all features and content on Freerice are accessible for students and staff. If you experience any issues, please check your network's firewall or content filtering settings to confirm these domains are permitted.

How can my students play Freerice in large groups without getting kicked off the server?

If you can share a list of IP addresses that are coming from your school and we can verify that they are indeed linked to this school, we can ask our developers to "whitelist" these addresses so that they do not trigger our anti-bot protections.

Is there a way to do a mass registration of students so we can use your site?

At the moment, our platform doesn't support bulk registration for users. However, we understand the need for this feature and are actively exploring ways to make group registration available in the future.

How can I host a competition on Freerice?

To host a competition, all participants need to create a Freerice account. Once everyone has registered, you can divide players into teams and set up a "Freerice Group" for each team. As the group administrator, you’ll be able to track the number of rice grains generated by each team and monitor individual contributions through the leaderboard. This setup makes it easy to compare stats, inspire friendly competition and make a meaningful impact!

How can a teacher track the progress of his or her students?

Each user can see how many grains of rice he or she has generated by looking under their "Profile". You can also create a Group for your class (https://play.freerice.com/groups) to collectively raise rice. You will be able to track individual progress on the Group Leaderboard and see the cumulative rice grains that are raised by all players within the group.

Due to state education requirements, we have to confirm how all vendors handle Student Personal Data.

We understand the importance of addressing data privacy concerns, particularly for schools. At this time, we do not have a designated focal point to sign off on legal agreements related to student personal data. However, we are actively working on clarifying our privacy policies and processes, with a goal of formal adoption by schools across the US in the near future. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work toward ensuring compliance with state education requirements.
