Blog entry You Asked For it: New Subjects

13 June 2011

Grab a comfy seat and a fresh cup of coffee, prepare to get stuck at your computer for a few hours. The many requests for additional subjects from Freericers who can answer questions with their eyes shut, have been heard. Today we launched two new subjects: Literature and Flags of the World, found on the subjects page.

Why did we chose Literature and Flags of the World instead of IQ Games, Human Anatomy or any other subject? We considered all your suggestions on the Feedback forum (and everything else from Arabic to Zoology).

The final decision was simply based on what you wanted. Both of these subjects received the most number of votes. Over 700 Freericers put their hands up for a literature subject, while over 500 voted for a subject dedicated to the country flags of the world.

However, we may consider adding even more, depending on how these subjects are received! So if you like what you see, spread the word: invite bookworm friends to do some good in the world, challenge your local whiz kid to a tournament, share it on Facebook, tweet about it.

Subjects are not the only new addition to Freerice. We also recently launched Freerice Español, with more languages on the way. And because more than 300 Freericers have requested Freerice t-shirts and merchandise we will soon be launching an official Freerice store in the next coming weeks! Make sure to check back often.

Freerice is maintained by and supports the United Nations World Food Programme, the world's largest humanitarian organisation fighting hunger worldwide. To find out more go to WFP.org

History of various countries would be cool to, or maybe geography of the country, like the statue of liberty is here, the golden gate bridge is here. Another thing would be seperating countries and capitals by region or language spoken, this would be a useful study tool.

Keep the new subjects coming! Human Anatomy would be really cool, you could add more to math as well.

I love it! Keep adding subjects! This is a great place to learn and help the world at the same time! This is great for students during the summer too, especially those who are stay-cationing. :) Keep up the great work!

Thank you so much for the new additions, viz. Flags of the world & Literature. They are really welcome for Free-Ricers. However, it would also be useful if you could add on Arabic language and also Music with naming composers and compositions, history and the techniques in Music. This would be an excellent subject for music lovers and students of Music.

Sat, 06/18/2011 - 18:20 bridiefraser9

need some new subjects and some time soon

I'm glad there are new catagories, but think the subjects could be better leveled. For example, Germany's flag was on either level 2 or 3, but tiny countries I've never heard of are on level 1? It makes no sense. You should start with easier flags like Germany and Canada then graduate to more obscure countries. I'm also a fan of adding an anatomy catagory, also maybe a history catagory maybe with subcatagories of US history, world history, WWII, the cold war, etc.

This is auspicious! Not only am I a Freerice fan, but I'm a complete and total bookworm! I've already gotten few hundred grains on Literature, and it's only been 5-ish minutes. This is a challenge for me as I'm not even in my teens yet, but I love a challenge! MERCI BEAUCOUP to all of the Freerice team!

Human anatomy sounds like a great one. I think it will pull in more and more people who are interested in helping out. People like to learn, but people also love to answer questions they know and see the totals go up!

I am looking forward to the new subjects but am having a problem, for some reason this site has not uploaded any amounts of my points for June - it doesn't show any of the activity, and I am reticent to play until I figure out what is wrong.

Wed, 06/15/2011 - 23:04 lynn_blake

I'm very excited for both of these new topics! I would definitely suggest that you add another subject to a field other than the humanities. I think that expanding your horizons is the best way to continue receiving support, and it will increase your rice count, per day.

Thank you thank you thank you thank you for new subjects. I will indeed tell all my friends who have played FreeRice in the past. Human anatomy certainly sounds like an interesting subject for the future....

My spouse is a programmer from way back, so I understand that each time you improve a computer system, you are likely to trigger all kinds of havoc with what already was working. So I am not surprised -- but I am frustrated -- that both signing in & getting my choice of a group to be recognized is just not working for the past *several* days. I see one comment that someone else is having trouble also. I have been forced to "sign in" multiple times, and sometimes I just give up. Even tho I would hope that I could earn rice even without getting "credit" for it. And records for June are non-existent. In fact, the end of May is not even updated. So, great new subject areas, and expanding to being offered in Spanish is clearly an important advance. However, please clean up the resulting problems for us English-speakers. I realize this is a mammoth undertaking. The site is awesome, despite bugs. Thank you!

I agree with the earlier commenter that the site's problems need to be fixed before doing things like adding new categories. My group had its entire rice totals (over 70,000 grains) erased yesterday.

I think the new subjects are pretty cool. : ) Maybe even more subjects will be awesome! I like them though. :D

Tue, 06/14/2011 - 12:15 Lea Maria Kielsholm

It's so awesome with the new subjects! Especially because they are very different from each other. But I would still like to have more subjects :D

Tue, 06/14/2011 - 03:12 Rice 4 Free

Im SO glad they're coming out with a FreeRice store! You should give the bulk of the profits to getting more rice, while the rest should be used to advertise the site and bring FreeRice to a wider audience through TV commercials, billboards, etc. It would also be cool if, for the store's grand opening, you could set up a contest where maybe the top 10 or 20 donaters for that day recive a free shirt. I think that would make people would try harder and generate more rice.

Tue, 06/14/2011 - 01:49 Kell

Thats great but it is of no use if our rice is not counted - I have amassed 90000 points for June but they have all been taken off me when I logged on this morning - has this happened to anyone else

Tue, 06/14/2011 - 01:31 Math freak 3.14

I kinda think that they're both too hard for kids. I think that for others maybe but I think that you should add other subjects too, freerice. Human anatomy sounded cool and it would be a challenge, but not too hard.

Mon, 06/13/2011 - 21:41 Richdude486

Very nice...

Mon, 06/13/2011 - 19:44 Hung4ry

Great to have 2 new categories to play! but PLEASE sort out all the glitches as still no June totals being added. And I've actually lost some of the grains I'd donated. What is happening?

Mon, 06/13/2011 - 19:11 jjmurph82

I'm so glad you finally made new subjects literature will be more of a guessing game for younger kids but flags of the world will be good in geography classes worldwide!
