Blog entry One Million Registered Freericers, And Counting!

03 January 2012

It’s official. As of today, you are playing alongside ONE MILLION registered Freerice players! This milestone represents a significant step in our online movement to end hunger. Together, by doing our small part, we’ve earned BILLIONS of grains of rice for the world’s hungriest through the UN World Food Programme (WFP).

Nancy Roman, WFP Director of Communications, Public Policy and Private Partnerships had this to say: “When one million people each do their small part, the collective effect is beyond impressive—it’s extraordinary.”

Freericers hail from over 179 countries, answering almost 2.5 million trivia questions daily. From all walks of life, we are united by one cause – the fight against hunger. We come together to play and learn, while providing meals to those who need it most. Take a look at this infographic for other great information

Since June 2011, all rice raised has supported . By encouraging kids to attend school and helping them to learn better when they get there, daily school meals are an essential investment in the next generation.

Recently Freerice, reached another milestone: were were named one of the best charity sites of 2011 by Netted, an online publication by the Webbys that covers the best of the web.

We can never say this enough: thank you to all the Freericers who help to make Freerice the powerful tool that it is in the fight against hunger!

We look forward to "ricing up” against hunger with all of you in 2012!

Freerice is maintained by and supports the United Nations World Food Programme, the world's largest humanitarian organization fighting hunger worldwide. To find out more go to WFP.org

How many grains of rice are in a cup of dry rice?
We are donating dry rice right?
I want to be able to donate a cup of rice everyday. From what I've seen over the internet (also, I know there are 7000 grains in a lb) there are about 7000 grains of dry rice in a cup. Is that what I need to work for everyday if I want to donate a cup a day?
BTW, a cup of dry rice is 4 servings of cooked rice. I hope I can help with this much daily.

I love the concept behind freerice.com. With over one million users, I think that adding an up-to-date counter of rice being donated (as well as amounts received by organizations/countries) would be an essential feature for the website.

World commissariat reserve is reduced

" Hunger breeds discontentment", grain prices soaring involves thousands on thousands of people's interests.

From public interest, prices will increase the cost of living, which directly affect the lives of ordinary people; look from macroscopical economy angle, the subprime crisis in the United States and high oil prices in the background, soaring prices will increase many countries inflation pressure, making the world economy, especially in developing economies face more uncertain factors.

What is more serious is that, in the grain price rise at the same time, world commissariat reserve is reduced, food safety problem has become increasingly prominent. According to FAO estimates, the current global commissariat reserve has fallen to the lowest level since 1980.
