Blog entry 5 Things You Should Know About Hunger

10 May 2011

While playing Freerice, if you didn't know, for every correct answer you choose 10 grains of rice are donated to the United Nations World Food Programme to feed the world's hungry.

Raising rice is one way to help, but telling your friends and family about the problem, and raising awareness is also very important if we are to achieve broad-reaching and long term solutions. Here are 5 facts about hunger that you and absolutely everyone should know:

1. At present, there are 925 million people in the world who do not eat enough to be healthy. That means, one in every seven people on Earth goes to bed hungry each night.
See where the world's hungry are on the WFP Hunger Map

2. Rising food prices pushed an additional 44 million people into hunger between June 2010 and February 2011 when they soared to their highest level ever.

3. While the number of hungry people has risen, as a percentage of the world population, hunger has actually fallen from 33 per cent of the population in 1969 to just over 15 per cent of the population in 2010.

4. Well over half of the world’s hungry people–some 578 million people–live in Asia and the Pacific region. Africa accounts for just over one quarter of the world’s hungry population.

5. Hunger is number one on the list of the world’s top 10 health risks. It kills more people every year than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.

These facts are taken from the WFP's "10 Things Everyone Should Know About Hunger"

My Library has a ummer reading prgram for older kids and part of it is a game card. There are many different activities on this card and one is donate 4,000 grains of rice to the hungry using and I think it was an amazing idea that will help kids realize that there are other kids going hungry.

I just discovered a few days ago, and i can't wait to help. i posted a link to the website on facebook and talked about it, and already some of my friends have played! i don't see this as a one time thing though (play the game once and be done with it)...i am going to make sure to play every single day, because the thought of my rice being given to hungry people...i feel like i am making a difference.

I would like to say that is a very good thing that started because many people might not have to go and give people food and this a very good way that everyone can help out by just even giving 100 to 200 everyday.
